Adoption and Termination of Parental Rights
Adoption is often called “adoption-termination” because the rights of the biological parent must be terminated before another person can adopt a child. One of the most common circumstances of adoption-termination occurs when a stepparent adopts a child for whom he or she already serves as a parent figure. In these cases, the biological parent is either missing, no longer involved in the child’s life, or unfit for other reasons.
There are two ways to terminate a biological parent’s rights:
- Voluntary termination: The biological parent can voluntarily give up his or her rights by signing a consent form.
- Involuntary termination: The rights of the parent can be terminated involuntarily in court based on specific grounds, such as failing to provide support or have any contact with the child for a period of at least six months.
Assisted Reproductive Technologies
Families come in all shapes and sizes—and by many different means. The road to your bundle of joy will not look like anyone else’s. Our office has experience on both sides of the playing field and can effectively advocate for our client’s and their families.
Attorney Tiffany Johns is experienced in handling both sides of adoption-termination cases. She has successfully overturned terminations of parental rights in appeals. Knowing how termination of parental rights cases can be challenged helps her avoid those challenges when representing clients in seeking adoption.
